Acne - Remove Milia That Look Like Whiteheads But They Are Not Acne

All of us want good-looking skin. Acne is the biggest obstacle in our effort. There are other skin problems that look like acne but are not acne. Milia is one of them. Milia are white spots on the face that can form at any age. Milia look like white pearls and most of us confuse them with whiteheads of acne. They are not whiteheads. So the treatment is different. Common acne treatment will not help remove milia but create more skin problems. Find out the difference between milia and whiteheads for a good-looking face.

Acne- what are whiteheads: whiteheads form when the dead skin cells, white blood cells, bacteria P.Acnes and sebum block the opening of the sebaceous glands. The gland has a closed mouth and this comedone is called acne. This acne troubles us because if it gets further infected, it can create scarring and spoil the facial skin forever.

Mila- milia is the accumulation of dead skin cells that is not able to get out of the skin. Milia has no infection like whiteheads and no bacteria or pus. Milia has no sebum in its formation. Our skin sheds dead skin cells everyday. Sometimes, when these cells cannot be shed out from the skin, they accumulate and form miila. When you extract a milia from the skin, you will only see white mass. They are dead skin cells.

Milia treatment- the only way to remove milia is to get them extracted from skin. Don't extract milia yourself if they are located on your eyelids. The best way to prevent milia is to get the top skin layer exfoliated regularly. Get microdermabrasion done regularly. AHAs are also good for removing the top dead skin cells regularly. Vitamin A derivative creams are also good to peel off the top skin layer. Consult your doctor about prevention and removal.

Acne is a very common skin disorder. It is estimated that more than 10% of adults age 25 - 44 have acne. Furthermore, the acne rate is estimated to be over 85% in the population age 12 to 25 at one time or another.

Acne needs to be treated as it can cause skin infection, scaring and more serious health problems. The good news is that there are many solutions to acne and it does not have to be a debilitating condition forcing the person affected by face acne to stay home In shame.

Acne is a skin condition caused by an imbalance in the sebum (or oil) production by the skin, mainly affecting the face, neck and torso areas. Acne worsens when the sebaceous glands, under the skin, become contaminated with oily toxic matter containing such elements as: dirt, dead skin, excess sebum oil, acid waste, bacteria and toxic substances to name a few.

in a normal healthy skin, the sebaceous glands release oil that comes up through the pores onto the skin surface making it smooth and healthy looking. When a person suffers from excess production of this sebum or oil, the skin becomes oily and the skin pores are blocked trapping the oil and dirt particles. These trapped particles of dirt and oil then start creating pimples and zits.

It is important to use prudent caution when a pimple has formed as it is more prone to trap bacteria and this can result in a more serious skin infection. Essential precautions to avoid a flare-up of facial and body acne include daily cleaning of the skin with the proper soap. Another very important element to prevent infection of the affected facial skin is to avoid putting one's hands in the face as hands are well-known carriers of bacteria. In the case of severe acne complicated by infection of the underlying skin, scarring can result.

It is of primary importance to consult a skilled physician to get the proper diagnosis and treatment when a person suspects she is suffering from acne.

Prevention of acne is a good part of the solution. Washing one's face once or twice daily with fresh water is a great start in that direction.

It is also highly recommended for a person suffering from face and body acne not to do a force drainage of any papule or pustule present. Hence, when "popping a zit" pronounced and permanent scarring can result.

Acne can be the manifestation or a deeper health problem as toxins are just being expelled through the skin pores. Acne can be caused by the repeated intake of food high in fatty content,  poor digestion of food, weak liver and other conditions which can cause the blood to carry too much toxicity.

There are many topical creams against acne available on the market. A person suffering from acne should consult her physician or pharmacist to select the treatment that will help her most control and eventually clear her acne.

Acne - Vitamins That Can Help

If you have acne and are looking for a safe treatment, there are many vitamins which can assist in healing the skin, improving skin health and help to free you of acne. Acne can destroy an individual's self esteem and unfortunately there is no "cure". Many of the acne medications can have bad side effects and some of the anti-acne skin care products can have harsh chemicals. Therefore, the best approach is a natural one and vitamins can go a long way in helping you to become acne-free.

Acne can be caused by and made worse by nutritional deficiencies and this is not so surprising when you look at how many refined foods most people eat, not to mention nutrient-poor foods such as sweets and foods containing refined sugars. The body has an amazing capacity to heal itself but this requires proper nutrition. Some good acne vitamins include Zinc, Vitamin A and vitamin E as these vitamins can help strengthen the immune system, assist in repairing the skin and help promote healthy skin. It is important that when you take vitamins that you do not only focus on a few vitamins but take a balance of all the vitamins needed - else you may cause vitamin deficiencies by overdosing on a few key vitamins and not taking a varied balance. Also, if you are pregnant or have certain health concerns, you should see your doctor before embarking on any acne vitamin program.

By far one of the most successful approaches to treating acne - or any health concern is to take a total approach where all factors concerned are considered. This would include resolving any nutritional problems, deficiencies as well as improving skin care, skin hygiene and any other factors which may be making your acne worse like stress and poor lifestyle. By following a total approach you would be more likely to get rid of acne without having to use expensive products or prescription drugs.

Vitamins are key to helping free you of acne as vitamins can help the body increase its ability to heal itself and increase skin health. Often though, many people who suffer from acne do not recover from the use of vitamins alone. Usually acne needs to be tackled using treatments to improve skin hygiene as well as handling any lifestyle and stress factors which may be making the acne worse. Therefore, I advise the use of vitamins along with a complete program which takes a total approach to treat acne.            Acne, Why Do Some People Get it and Some People Don't?

Acne and pimples is one of a teenagers worst nightmares, affecting more than 85% of the teenage population. Acne can be disfiguring, but its main effects are psychological which leads to low self-esteem.

What is acneall

Acne is the result of hair follicles and pores that become clogged. The most common form of acne is known as acne vulgaris. This does not mean vulgar, it just means common acne. Many teenagers get this type of acne. The most common area affected is the face followed by the back, shoulders and chest.

Why do some people get acne and some do not?

Although, much research and studies have been conducted in this field, no one knows for sure why one person gets acne and another person doesn't. There are several factors that are associated with developing acne.

The following is a list of possible links to acne:

* Hereditary: Acne tends to run in families where other members also have developed acne. Family history of acne is associated with earlier occurrence of acne.

* Use of anabolic steroids: Steroids affect the process of pubertal growth and sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are connected to hair follicles which secrete an oily substance called sebum. When this process is altered (by steroids) these glands and pores get clogged up, resulting in acne.

* Medication: Any medication containing...lithium (treatment for migraine and cluster headaches, bipolar disorder, depression)...barbiturates (sedative/hypnotic drugs)...androgens (steroid drugs) contribute to acne.

* Hormones: Acne may be hastened by androgens, male hormones that are present in both women and men. These androgen hormones have long been faulted for acne. They stimulate the sebaceous glands, producing more oil, which leads to clogged pores and provides a breeding ground for the acne bacteria.

* Bacteria in the pores: Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is the anaerobic bacterium that causes acne. When the sebaceous glands start to over produce oil, the p.acne invades the hair follicles and starts to multiply by feeding themselves of the oil using enzymes. Acne bacteria then produces fatty acids that inflame the skin. Red and white blood cells start to defend the body of this inflammation often causing an inflammatory response, that results in pimples, whiteheads, zits, swelling and pus.

* Chemicals: Exposure to dioxins not only causes acne-like pimples, but are among the most dangerous poisons known.

* Accumulation of dead skin cells: Acne begins when the oil (sebum) mixes with dead skin cells. This combination plugs up the skin's pores and becomes infected with bacteria that oozes into nearby tissues, resulting in swelling, nodules, pimples or whiteheads.

* Stress: Stress doesn't cause acne, but stress often makes it worse.

The first signs of acne should be treated as soon as possible. The earlier the treatment the better chance of getting rid of it before possible scarring. There are a variety of products and treatments for acne. You may have to try different ones to see which works best on your acne.

Natural Skin Care - Acne

Acne is one of the most common and unpleasant skin conditions, and it is one that nearly everyone suffers from. In fact, according to dermatologists, more than 90 percent of teenagers develop some form of acne, which can often continue into adulthood. As you might expect, these folks will do just about anything to get rid of unsightly pimples.

That often means buying over-the-counter acne medications at their local pharmacy. And while these products may be fairly effective at eliminating your acne in the short term, they do absolutely nothing to make your skin healthier, which will help prevent future breakouts. They are essentially a short-term solution.

Side Effects

Anyone who has ever used harsh over-the-counter medications knows after the first application that there is absolutely nothing natural about them. These products use harsh chemicals to eliminate oil on your skin and, in so doing, they often cause excessive drying. The chemicals also often cause redness, even soreness for people with sensitive skin. So, while you may get rid of a pimple or two, your skin will likely be dry, uncomfortable and ultimately unsightly. In all honestly, dry, red skin does not look healthy.

Why use Natural Acne Productsall

The truth is that no one knows how their skin will react to the harmful chemicals that are often the main ingredients in some of the most popular acne medications. Also, as we mentioned, these products are a short-term solution. And while there's nothing that acne suffers want more than to get rid of their acne immediately, it is important to consider the overall health of your skin. Because, if you skin is healthy, your will find that your breakouts are greatly reduced in the future.

Though they are certainly not a panacea, natural products are often the safest and most effective way to treat acne breakouts. Natural products are also competitively priced. For some strange, unknown reason people often assume that natural means expensive, but that is not the case when it comes to acne treatments. In fact, you may be shocked to find that natural treatments are often cheaper than products that contain harsh chemicals.

But in spite of these common misconceptions, the fact is that natural acne treatments are increasingly popular with everyone from young teens to adults who suffer from acne. Let us take a moment to review exactly why these medications are growing in popularity.

Benefits of Natural Acne Treatments

*No known side effects
*Much safer, especially for people with sensitive skin
*Will not irritate or dry out the skin
*Non-toxic
*Helps to make skin healthier over the long term
*Non-allergenic
*Can be used as often as needed

In conclusion, as we have seen, some of the most popular acne medications on the market today can actually do more harm than good. While they may be used to dry out the skin and thusly reduce the appearance of pimples a bit, over the long term the do absolutely nothing to prevent future breakouts. It is also a fact that these chemically-based products can irritate the skin and cause redness and discomfort. On the other hand, natural acne treatments work to balance out the oils in the skin that are causing your breakouts. They do this not by robbing the skin of essential oils, but rather by using natural ingredient to guard against excessive oiliness.            Acne - Vitamins That Can Help

Acne - Does Sunshine Improve It?

Acne - everybody has a favorite treatment

Acne has many treatments. Being a very common problem, people have found their own ways of treating acne. Some of them don't cure acne but may further damage the skin. Many of us believe that acne can be treated by getting exposed to sun, but is it trueall Let us find out the truth.

Acne - causes

Once we know about what causes acne, we can find out if sunshine affects any of them. The causes of acne are very simple. Because of hormonal changes and sometime pressure or chemicals, body produces more sebum. The gland keeps on producing sebum, but the gland opening gets closed with dead skin. This makes the gland expand like a balloon. The bacteria P.acnes infects the gland and inflames it. This gland forms the acne. If the infection is not severe you will call it black head or white heads, otherwise pimples, cystic acne etc.

Acne - treatments

Every acne treatment tries to address one or more of the causes of acne formation. Sunlight does not address any of the causes. What it does is to either burn the skin or tan it. With tanned look, acne looks less apparent and we believe that it is going away. But that is not true. Rather sun damages the skin and may cause early wrinkles, aging and even cancer. Please consult your doctor about acne treatment and stop believing that sun can cure it.

Acne is a type of skin disease that is mainly caused due to the excessive secretion of oil called sebum. Basically, the function of this oil is to regulate the skin texture and body hair by reasonably moistening it. It is produced by the sebaceous glands present in the skin. But, due to excessive lubrication, you easily become prone to the development of congested pores on the skin surface. These pores give rise to various skin bumps such as cysts, blackheads and whiteheads, pimples etc.

There are various types of bumps, which vary in nature. Cyst is a condition where your skin is covered with a tiny sac that is filled with fluid. In the case of whiteheads, the pores get blocked with sebum and protrude slightly outward. When the pores stay open and are filled with sebum, they get darkened from the outside surface, and these are known as blackheads. When the pores get exposed to a different kind of organic matter such as bacteria and other germs, usually a reddish colored swelling will be noticed, and this is known as a pimple.

Acne is commonly found between the age group of 10 to 40 years. You can find a quicker treatment, if you have thorough knowledge regarding the causes and how they should be treated. You can go to a drug store or cosmetic center and find medicines for yourself. In case it is not easy to understand your actual skin condition, you can consult a physician and follow his prescription.

Acne - What Kind Of Soap Should You Use?

Acne treatment is a tough job for one who has it. They want acne to disappear overnight. But that does not happen. Soap has a role in treatment of acne. Some patients use soaps that peel off the skin and make it very dry assuming that acne will be treated faster.  Does that really help or irritate the skin furtherall Some patients want to feel the skin soft and use soap with moisturizer. Some want the soap to have good perfume and want to feel good after washing. What kind of soap works well for acne patients? Let us find out.

Let us begin with the simple question- why do we use soap? We use soap to remove all the dirt, grime and impurity from the skin. Every other factor such as perfume etc. is secondary. Does your soap emulsify all the dirt and other impurities on your skin? Do you feel that your skin looks very clean after washing? If yes, that soap is right for you if you have acne. What about soap that removes more oils from the skin and makes it dry to very dry? This kind of soap is used because many people believe that oil or sebum alone is the main cause of acne. Please note here that sebum is one of the causes of acne, but by itself it cannot cause acne. If the gland opening is clear the excess oil/sebum will flow away and no acne will form. Therefore stop irritating your acne with harsh soaps. A moisturizer has no role to play in acne treatment. It keeps the moisture in and keeps skin hydrated.

Try to use a neutral soap with pH of 7. Acidic soap will cause unnecessary irritation. First look at the main function of soap, which is cleansing property. Think of perfume etc. later. Wash your face gently twice a day and dry the skin. Apply your topical medicine after that. It will reach the depth of skin faster.

Acne - Any Difference Between Face And Body?

Acne on face and body-

Most of us think of face when we think of acne.  That is because of two reasons. Acne does affect face more than other body areas. Secondly we can hide acne on our back or chest, but not on face. Acne on face makes us self-conscious. Let us find out what is the difference between acne on face and acne on other body areas.

Acne- where does it formall

Acne forms on the sebaceous glands. Every sebaceous gland is suspect to form acne. The sebum that gets blocked inside the gland forms acne by getting infected. By this theory we can get acne on allover body except few places such as lips etc. that do not have sebaceous glands.

Sebaceous glands distribution on body-

Though our whole body skin has these glands, the density is different. These glands are more on face and upper trunk. Areas such as feet etc. all have glands but the density is much small. Therefore we have more probability of getting acne on face and upper trunk compared to other body parts.

Is acne different on different body parts?

Acne as I said earlier is a disease of sebaceous glands. As the glands all over the body are same the acne is also same. There is no difference at all between acne on face and acne on the upper arms or trunk. Please treat acne on all body areas with the same medication. There is no difference. health care providers think that acne  may be associated with a hormone imbalance.

What a shame.  Just about the time that life starts to come together, the
good job, a home of your own and perhaps the man of your dreams, you wake up
one morning and have pimplesall  What kind of cruel joke is that?

Most women who notice these breakouts make an appointment with their
family doctor to seek an immediate diagnosis to determine the cause of the
breakout.  In a lot of cases the results will come back that you have
adult acne.

The fact that adults have acne puts to rest the old wives tales and the young men's lies that sex, chocolate or puberty are the cause nor cure this problem.   Acne is suppose to be the private hell of teenagers not another cause of stress for grown up women and some men.

A dermatologist will usually prescribe a cleaning regimen to clear the problem.
Nine times out of ten, the regimen prescribed will not work for you because it has not worked for thousands of other acne sufferers.

A sudden breakout on the skin may not be acne but can be the results of
an allergic reaction to foods or other materials.  Seeing a doctor
is prudent.  His diagnosis can eliminate using products or treatments
that do not address your specific problem.

But I have to tell you that after several years watching teenagers with this problem and conducting research, Acne is a problem with the whole body.  Acne is the result of the body losing certain
nutrients.  Now, why it shows up again in adults is because at certain stages of our lives, we
put or bodies under tremendous stress.

Acne is  problematic for adults who also are balancing several issues in  real life.  Stress may be the underlying cause for Acne.  If stress is the problem the cure would be simply to de-stress the system.  Of course, this is easier said than done.  Try some relaxation techniques, deep breathing and visualization.

If everything fails to relieve the condition, then you have to resort to a complete analysis of what is happening in your body.  Are you drinking enough water to flush out toxins.  Are you eating enough fruits and vegetables to keep your body free from "free radicals."

Acne is caused from imbalances and impurities within the body. Acne has to be treated from the inside out.  Research clinical trials using known acne over the counter treatment provided little data to suggest that topical treatments have a long term positive result on acne.

Other data:  There were deficiencies in zinc, vitamin A, and some essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid.  Poor digestion is another underlying physical cause of acne.

But the major result from the study showed that protecting the body  from free radicals will help the skin fight infections.  Using anti-oxidants to fight inflammation that causes the redness and heals damaged skin naturally is the best course of action to gain long term natural relief from Acne.   It just makes sense that if the cause of acne is internal than internal cleansing and supplementation is the answer.

Acne has some serious emotional and social side effects. These side effects include depression and anxiety in social situations. There is no age restriction on developing these acne related symptoms.

There may very well be a natural cure that will work for your acne.  Nature has a cure for everything. She included acne in the arsenal.            Acne - Clear Your Skin Naturally

Acne- Does Rubbing Alcohol Help?

Recently I cam across a question about acne. Someone wanted to know if rubbing alcohol would cure acne. Such ideas about acne are widespread. It is not only rubbing alcohol, but also whites of eggs, toothpaste, tanning and other miracle cures for acne. Let us find out if rubbing alcohol will help.

Acne- why it formsall

Once you understand why acne forms, you can decide what will help. Because of hormonal changes in the body, the sebaceous glands that are always open start getting blocked. Because of this block the sebum that is produced by the glands gets accumulated inside the gland. This is the beginning of acne. If the gland were open the sebum would have gone out on the skin. We now have a gland that is everyday getting bigger with more sebum. The bacteria P.acnes loves this sebum and begins multiplying in the gland. This infects the gland. Now we have a gland that is full of sebum, dead cells and bacteria. The body sends white cells to fight the bacteria. So pus also gets inside the gland. This inflating gland that is called a pimple, bursts when it can no more hold the matter inside. You land up with acne scar.

Acne- treatment

the acne treatment is directed towards keeping the gland open, reducing sebum production, and killing the multiplying bacteria. If one can take steps to treat all these three issues the acne will get cured. Rubbing alcohol will only kill any bacteria that are present on the skin. It will not help in keeping the gland open or reducing the sebum production. It is also doubtful about how much alcohol will reach inside the acne and kill the bacteria there. It is therefore not advised to try treating acne with rubbing alcohol.            Acne - Treat Acne With Benzoyl Peroxide For Quick Results

Acne treatment is becoming more complicated with new drugs coming to the market everyday. All these drugs promise immediate and sure treatment of acne. What about the good old benzoyl peroxideall Let us discuss.

Acne treatment-

How do you treat acne? To clear acne one must address the causes. Acne forms because of clogged sebaceous glands on our sin. These glands are connected with hair follicle and produce sebum. Sebum is the oiliness of the skin.  When the gland produces more sebum, and dead skin cells accumulate, they block the pore of the gland. Now you have a balloon full of dead skin cells and sebum. The bacteria P.acnes infect this gland and produces pus inside the gland. This is the moderate or the sever stage of acne. As the gland expands with more sebum, pus and dead skin cells, it bursts after some days. That causes the liquid mass flows out and may form a scar is the acne forms deeper.

Acne and benzoyl peroxide-

Benzoyl peroxide is available in almost all forms of skin care- creams, gels, liquids, lotions, soap etc. Benzoyl peroxide acts in three ways. It kills the bacteria in acne. It opens closed acne pores and it removes excess oiliness from the skin. This way benzoyl peroxide treat acne by reducing excess sebum, disinfects acne by killing the bacteria and by opening the pore, it opens the gland and no accumulation takes place. Acne is cured.

Acne- how best to use benzoyl peroxide?

Patience is the first key. No acne treatment will clear acne overnight. It may take weeks before you see visible results. Apply benzoyl peroxide gel or cream twice a day after washing face. Apply all over the face even if acne is absent in some places. In the beginning some flare up may occur forming more acne but that settles over time and all the acne slowly clears.

Acne- precautions in use of benzoyl peroxide-

If you are pregnant or breast feeding, ask your doctor. If you have active eczema, you may irritate the skin further. If you are using other topical on the same place you may have a problem . Please consult your doctor in these cases. Benzoyl peroxide is a sure remedy of acne and is available in OTC. To learn more about acne treatment with topical applications click here- acne treament.

Quick Fix - Acne - Natural Remedies For Acne

Acne sufferers know how painful it is to suffer from acne and how it can affect us physically and emotionally. Many people are looking for the quick fix acne remedies to help them get rid of their acne fast. These remedies usually include using acne creams and products that you can easily find in the market. However, these products do not provide the results that we desire. The media have exaggerated their effectiveness and most people still suffer from acne even though they had used these products.

I had tried tons of acne products before giving up on them. I thought that the acne products are quick fix that can help to get rid of my acne fast and permanently. However, after years of trying different products, I finally gave up. I turned to holistic acne treatments and find that the methods used are much more effective.

Acne creams in the market are not able to cure acne because they do not treat the causes of acne. The products are only dealing with the symptoms of acne by killing the bacteria or getting rid of the excess dead skin cells. They failed to address the problems that cause these factors to occur in the first place.

The only quick fix acne remedies are using holistic methods that aim to get rid of the causes of acne. These methods include making changes to your diet and detoxing your body. Diet plays a huge role in treating acne naturally. Our modern day diet is full of junk foods that can cause hormonal irregularities and bad health.

You should reduce or stop your intake of sugar for a period. Eating foods that have high sugar content can lead to many problems. When you eat high sugar content foods, you will have excess sugar in your body and your body will produce insulin to get rid of the sugar. However, the presence of insulin can increase your skin cells turnover rate, which can make your pores vulnerable to clogging.

Your body will also produce androgen, which is a type of male hormones to help bring your blood sugar back to normal. This hormone can cause your oil glands to become overly active and cause your skin to become much oilier than usual. When you have more dead skin cells on your oily skin surface, you are more prone to acne breakouts.

The first quick fix acne remedy that I would recommend is to replace the high sugar content foods with natural foods like fruits, vegetables and nuts. These whole and natural foods will not cause your body to experience a spike in sugar level. These foods also contain essential nutrients that your body needs to perform optimally.

You should also start a detox or cleansing plan to help eliminate the toxins in the body. We have been eating too many foods that contain preservatives and additives. These are toxins that can be stuck in the body and cause your body function to become sluggish. Performing a detox can help to get rid of this problem.            Quick Fix - Acne - Natural Remedies For Acne

One of the most severe forms of acne is nodular or cystic acne. The lesions associated with this form can be quite large and very painful, and can cause a tremendous amount of damage. If cystic acne is not treated and controlled, it can result in extensive scarring and pitting. It is beyond the ability of many acne medications (especially OTC medications) to treat. Cystic acne almost always requires the involvement of a dermatologist.

In cystic acne, the skins oil glands overproduce sebum (oil). The glands become engorged and swollen and incapable of pushing out the excess oil. The swollen glands can rupture underneath the skin, leading to the redness, inflammation and the eventual scarring that often results.

Cystic acne can also have a tremendous psychological and emotional effect on its sufferers as well, as they are more likely to isolate themselves to avoid attracting unwanted attention. And their fears are often warranted as some people shun those afflicted with this form of acne. They may lose out when it comes to advancement at work, and also in social situations where they avoid risking rejection because of their condition. This illness can significantly erode the quality of life and the self-esteem of those who suffer from it.

Though this form of acne is a challenge to live with and to treat, there are medications available to fight it. If other drugs fail to get a handle on it, isotretinoin, a retinoid that's related to vitamin A is the drug most often prescribed. In fact, it's only available by prescription. As it's taken orally over a period of some weeks, it shrinks the oil glands so that mush less sebum is produced. It also helps unblock pores and restricts the production of new lesions. By unclogging the skin's pores, isotretinoin (sold as Accutane) also helps to reduce the inflammation associated with cystic acne. It's reported that up to 90% of patients have greatly diminished acne after a using it for the recommended period (up to 20 weeks). There may however be a need for repeat use if the acne returns, and it won't eliminate any pre-existing scarring.

There are some significant side effects to consider if one is going to use isotretinoin. The most serious one is that it's teratogenic and may cause severe birth defects. Pregnant women should never use it, nor should any woman become pregnant while taking isotretinoin. It's important that women who are going to use this drug, and who plan to get pregnant discuss with their doctor when it's safe to do so. Usually birth control is started one month before, and continued one month after this acne drug has been used.

Other side effects from using it include drying and inflammation of the mucous membranes, increased liver enzymes, a decrease in night vision, sun sensitivity, muscle soreness, elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and severe acne flare-ups. Some doctors will start with a low dose and increase it over a period of time while monitoring the patient to determine if there are adverse effects. It's possible that side effects may disappear if the dosage is reduced.

Isotretinoin is a potent medicine that should only be acquired by prescription and taken while under monitored by a doctor. If any adverse effects appear it's important that your doctor know right away so that the appropriate steps are taken.

While cystic acne is a potentially serious or even devastating medical problem, there are ways to attack and defeat it so that these sufferers can enjoy an improved quality of life.            Acne - Cystic Acne

Acne - Causes, Treatment and Prevention

Acne, zits, pizza face.  You've surely heard all the slang out there.  For many it's the thing jokes are made from.  To some it is a minor convenience that will be outgrown over time.  To some though, acne is much more than a minor inconvenience.  It can become a serious problem.  One which can not only be physically damaging, but mentally as well.

What is Acneall  Acne is an affliction normally associated with teenagers.  Acne appears when follicles, or pores in the skin are clogged.  Oil that usually escapes to the skin's surface is then trapped, where bacteria begins to grow and acne forms.

There are different types of acne, from mild cases such as whiteheads & blackheads, to more serious and potentially disfiguring cases like, acne conglobata.  Mild cases and normally easy to treat, while more severe cases, may require more aggressive therapy to control.

There is no definitive cause of acne, but there are several factors believed to play a part.  The most important factor is believed to be increased levels of androgens, the male sex hormone, which increases in males and females during puberty.  Another factor may be heredity, where the gene causing the development of acne is passed down from parent(s) to children.  Certain drug use may also contribute, as well as certain cosmetics, which could potentially alter the cells in the follicle, causing the follicle to stick together.

Contrary to popular believe, eating chocolate or greasy food will not cause acne to form, though diet is thought to help in the prevention of acne is some people.

Treatment of typical cases of acne usually includes over the counter products containing, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid.  These chemicals have proven effective in the treatment of mild cases of acne.  It is advised not to pick or squeeze Acne, as you will increase the risk is scarring.  Scrubbing the acne with a loofah or any other method is also not recommended, as scrubbing only makes it worse.

More severe or resistant Acne will require treatment by a licenced Dermatologist.  A Dematologist may prescribe topical treatments such as Retinoids, or Antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics may also be prescribed, as well as hormonal treatment in severe cases, like accutane.  Accutane is used as a last resort for those for which other treatments have been ineffective.

The prevention of acne may be as simple as keeping your hands and hair off your face, as your hands and hair contain oils which may contribute and contaminate the pores of your face.  Other prevention tips include the reduction of stress in your everyday life, exercise regularly, as well as eating a balanced diet.  Warm baths and getting plenty of sleep may also contribute in the prevention of acne.  It is also advised that makeup be used sparingly and be removed completely when not needed.

Acne is a difficult affliction for some to deal with, but with the right treatments and lifestyle changes, can be managed and minimized.  Some will surely outgrown it in time, but those who do not, have options to improve their quality of life.

Acne - The Testosterone Connection

Acne is a skin condition that affects both young men and young women alike. Not only that, acne is increasingly occurring in adults, and is an embarrassing problem for millions of men and women well into their thirties and forties. Has acne gotten worse over the past twenty years, or are we just imagining itall

Is it because we now have the internet and information is shared much more readily and easily that we know the true depth of the acne problem, or has it really become somewhat of an epidemic?

Well, my personal opinion is that acne has gotten much more widespread, especially in adults, and there may be any number of reasons for that, but at the heart of acne there is a culprit that can be both our friend, and in the case of acne, our enemy.

It's the male hormone (or androgen), testosterone. More specifically, it's a specific testosterone called DHT, or Dihydro Testosterone. This specific hormone, when produced in excessive amounts by the body, whether it be a female or male body, creates an environment for the oil glands to go into overdrive producing the natural oils that normally protect and moisturize the skin.

Normally, your oil glands are set to produce just enough oil to create the protective barrier between the environment and your skin, as well as act as a moisturizing agent, keeping the skin hydrated. When the oil glands are corrupted and begin to produce too much oil, things get nasty.

The oil has nowhere else to go, and so it clogs the pores, resulting in blackheads, whiteheads, cystic acne, and smaller acne lesions because of the inflammation caused by the clogged pore.

It's basically a case where your body's natural protective mechanisms are corrupted and begin to work against your skin rather than protect and moisturize it, as nature intended.

This testosterone overload is precisely why the best acne treatments are aimed at helping to balance the hormones again, so that can facilitate the natural equilibrium between estrogenic (female) hormones and androgenic (male) hormones that should exist in every man and woman.

Other effective acne treatments, like the controversial Acutane, otherwise known as isotretinoin, are aimed at actually drying up the oil glands. I happen to shy away from this method, because this means that when you age, you don't have those natural oil glands to protect your skin and keep the elasticity that keeps you looking young.

Acne is usually a problem rooted in hormonal imbalance, and very closely related to periods of life where hormones tend to be imbalanced. This is why people do tend to break out more in their adolescence, when the hormones are still finding their way to balance and the body is still developing and changing, and also in adults, when stressful periods occur, since hormone levels are very sensitive to stress in most individuals.

Some argue that our foods today may be causing increased cases of adolescent and especially adult acne, since our foods tend to contain a lot of hormones or hormone-mimicking compounds in them, and this interferes with the natural hormone balance of our bodies.

This can be solved by picking only natural, organic products, especially when buying your meats, cheeses and dairies which can contain vast amounts of synthetic hormones designed to make the animals produce more milk, which can then be leached by your body and mimic human hormones in the body, upsetting the delicate natural balance.

Another argument may be that stress levels are constantly on the rise in our increasingly busy, hectic lifestyles, and this has impacted the hormone balance of adults, causing acne to increase in the adult population.

Whatever the cause is, we do know that it is usually rooted in hormonal balance, and that DHT is the culprit. If we can find the right product to help our bodies achieve this natural balance again as well as help control the oil production of our oil glands, we've essentially won the battle against acne.

Acne - Is Witch Hazel Good For Stopping Acne?

Introduction

Is witch hazel good for acne preventionall It has many benefits for your body, but it is best known for its use on your skin to help clear up blemishes. It is also recommended by many dermatologists as one method to help treat acne.

What Is Witch Hazel

Native to North America, witch hazel is a low growing plant with yellow flowers that appear in the fall. The pods produced by the flowers actually explode and spread the seeds out to help spread the plant. This action gives the plant another name, snapping hazel.

Though people associate the name with a witch, it actually comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for wych, which means to bend easily.

The extract from the bark and leaves is what used to treat a various assortment of conditions such as hemorrhoids, cuts, and most important skin irritations and inflammations.

How Does Witch Hazel Work

Witch hazel has been found to fight skin acne with antibacterial properties and also to reduce the redness caused by acne. The antibacterial property in witch hazel is the tannin acid.

The tannin acid will reduce the inflammation caused by acne that you currently have. But it may cause skin irritation if you have sensitive skin, so it should be used with caution. But on the plus side, it is essentially pH neutral and will not disturb the pH of your skin.

When you use witch hazel it will remove excess oils on your face and actually dry it out. This action will help stop further development of acne and help clear up the acne your currently have.

One additional benefit of this product is it can be used as a skin cleanser since it is also an astringent. The Native American Indians used it for hundreds of years to cleanse with.

How To Use Witch Hazel

You can purchase it at just about any drug store or on the Internet in liquid form, but it is usually not provided as pure witch hazel, but is usually mixed with other ingredients good for your skin.

Using it is very simple. After washing your face, take a cotton ball and soak it in the solution you have. Then dabbing lightly, apply it to the affected areas on your face.

This action should be done at least twice a day, but if it is causing your skin to become irritated, you should stop using it.

Conclusion

This is another bullet you can put in your gun for your fight on acne. But the most effective way I found to stop acne and prevent it, is to cleanse your face twice a day and exfoliate your face at least once or twice a week.

Acne - Natural Cures

Many times mild to moderate acne can be treated naturally.  Natural treatment involves no harsh medications, such as Accutane, that can cause serious and harmful side effects.  Natural treatment involves adjusting the lifestyle to get rid of toxins in the body that are causing acne breakouts.  Natural treatments also use herbs to help jump-start the workings of the liver and other cleansing organs to help cleanse your body.

Acne is caused by either hormonal imbalances, such as the acne that occurs during pregnancy, or the pores being clogged by a substance known as sebum.  Many people think of acne as a problem of adolescence, but it is becoming increasingly a problem of adults as well.  Acne is usually found on the face, shoulders, neck and back.  If it is bad enough, acne can cause terrible scarring.

Several natural occurrences can cause breakouts or worsening of acne.  When a woman gets her menstrual cycle, the hormonal changes premenstrually can cause an acne flair-up.  Some prescription medications, specifically those designed to change hormonal levels, can cause acne.  Obesity is another cause, due to the change in the hormones associated with being overweight.  Stress is another factor.  A poor diet, especially one high in sugars and trans fatty acids is yet another cause.

One of the first areas to target to help cure acne is the diet.  Unprocessed foods are the best possible foods for those who wish to combat acne.  Vegetables and fruit should make up a large portion of the diet.  Refined sugar and fried foods should be avoided whenever possible.  Milk products can be another problem, as well as hydrogenated vegetable oil.  Avoid these things and increase the consumption of water and fiber.  Those suffering from acne should monitor their bowel movements and strive to consume enough fiber eventually to have a bowel movement with every meal.  This helps eliminate the toxins in the body that can lead to acne.

There are also several vitamins and herbs that help to stimulate the body to cleanse itself and get rid of the unsightly acne.  Vitamin A helps the body reduce the production of sebum.  On popular and dangerous, prescription drug, Accutane, is a high dose of vitamin A.  The problem with this drug is that it can cause severe birth defects if a woman who is taking it becomes pregnant and it can also lead to depression in teenagers.  It is better to take an over-the-counter Vitamin A supplement.

Zinc also helps to prevent acne, as well as heal current breakouts.  Zinc helps to regulate the hormonal imbalances that can cause acne.  Vitamin B6 is another helpful vitamin, particularly for women suffering from menstrual acne breakouts.  The herbs sarsaparilla, yellow dock, cleavers and burdock take together help clear the body of lymph infections and therefore of acne.  Tea tree oil can be applied directly to acne spots to help reduce the pain and appearance of the problem.

Sometimes those who suffer from acne find relief from massage treatments.  The process of improving circulation to the affected areas often helps reduce the acne breakouts.  Finally, reducing the stress in your life can help take away your acne.  Relaxation techniques work to this effect.

Acne - What Causes It

What is acne, reallyall  You may think you have the answer to this question, be it from learning about it from infomercials selling acne products or from your friends at school, but you'd be surprised at how much there is to know about acne.

With puberty comes many changes to our bodies.  For some people, acne is one of these changes.  Our bodies produce the hormone testosterone during puberty.  The skin converts the testosterone to dihydrotesterone, causing the skin to secrete oil.  Sometimes the oil can block dead skin cells from being shed, causing them to stick together and stay in the pore.  This is how acne begins.

Despite what you may have heard about acne, it is actually a skin defect.  This defect, called "retention hyperkeratosis", causes us to produce more skin cells than we can shed.  These extra skin cells begin to plug our pores causing blemishes.  Not only do oil and skin cells get trapped within the pores, dirt and bacteria also find a home there.

There are two different categories of acne blemishes.  These categories are inflamed and not inflamed.  Blemishes that are not inflamed can be separated into two types, commonly referred to as "whiteheads" and "blackheads".  A whitehead is simply a pore that has been clogged and the bacteria and debris have no way of escaping.  A blackhead is a whitehead that has been opened up and the oxidation of the oils in the skin have caused a blackish coloration.

Inflamed blemishes are the all too familiar pimple and the more bothersome and painful cyst.  These occur when a whitehead does not develop into a blackhead and the body begins the inflammatory process to expel it.  The body rejects the dead cells, dirt and bacteria and treats it as though it were a foreign invader, doing everything it can to get rid of it.

Some common misconceptions of what causes acne are that oily skin causes acne.  While it is understandable that one would think that, it is not entirely true.  People with dry skin are just as likely to develop acne as those with oily skin.  Chocolate and other greasy, fatty foods do not play any part in the development of acne.

There are many products on the market the promise to cure acne.  This is impossible.  Acne is not a curable condition.  However, the symptoms can be controlled.  Acne medications are used to prevent and control acne breakouts, but they will not offer a cure.  Over exposure to the sun is also not a cure for acne.  You may be thinking "When I sunbathe or work on my tan, the blemishes disappear or get better".  While this may be true, sun exposure does more harm to your skin than good.  Exposure to the sun can kill some of the bacteria that causes acne, but will eventually leave you with more blemishes.  This is because your skin will produce excess oil to keep from drying out, clogging your pores even more and damaging your skin.
